It didn’t take long for curious neighbors to show up. They leaned against Marco’s fence, eyes wide, voices hushed, as though speaking loudly might anger whatever caused it.
“This quake swallowed the earth whole,” one man whispered. Another nodded nervously. People traded theories in low tones, their fear mixing with fascination as they stared into the hole.
