Even the other orangutans seemed unsettled by Mara’s odd behavior. They watched her from a distance, quietly exchanging glances, sometimes calling to her with soft grunts that usually meant friendship or concern.
The usual playfulness had faded, replaced by a hush that lingered across the enclosure, making everyone feel that something serious was happening.
