Brushing it off
The manageable thudding could easily be explained. Probably the house settling, or a mole was doing work inside his crawl space. Nothing to worry about. And surely nothing to get out of bed for at this hour. Ben’s alarm was scheduled to go off at 06:30 AM to feed his sheep and chickens, a routine he guarded. So he valued his sleep over going out for any minor disturbance. But then this happened… something he couldn’t brush off.
