The heavy gate creaked open, and the sounds of splashing water filled the air. The baby hippo spotted them instantly, squealing as if relieved. David held Julia’s hand tightly, following the two zookeepers onto the sandy ground.
The keepers carried long poles for protection, scanning the area carefully. “Stay close behind us,” one instructed. The couple nodded. Julia’s eyes never left the small hippo, who was bobbing its head and moving quickly toward them from the water.
