The enclosure was large, with boulders, shallow pools, and sandy patches. The zookeepers led the way, checking corners and shaded areas where hippos often rested. Nothing unusual appeared at first. A few hippos blinked lazily at the group but didn’t move.
David couldn’t shake the unease in his stomach. “Why would the calf be away from its mother?” he whispered. Julia nodded, feeling the same worry. The baby gave another cry, almost like urging them forward.
