They reached a bend in the enclosure where larger rocks created natural shade. The calf squealed louder now, circling in one spot and nudging Julia’s hand when she caught up. “Something’s here,” Julia said firmly.
The zookeepers scanned the rocks but saw nothing obvious. David bent slightly, peering into the shadows. The calf wouldn’t leave the spot, and its repeated cries grew higher in pitch. Everyone grew tense, waiting for something to reveal itself.
