One of the keepers stepped forward cautiously, pole in hand, tapping the ground near the shaded rocks. The hippos sunbathing in the distance didn’t react. Julia held her breath, watching closely.
The baby hippo squealed again, nudging Julia’s leg as though demanding action. “Whatever it is, it’s behind that laurel bush,” Julia deduced. Behind the boulder formation was a large patch of green foliage covering the corner of the fenced enclosure.
