Julia crouched low, meeting the mother’s eyes at her level. She gently rested her palm on the calf’s back and nudged it forward. “Go on,” she whispered to the little one. The baby waddled closer, squealing and pressing its head against the mother’s massive front legs.
For a moment, nothing happened. Then, slowly, the mother lowered her own head, brushing against her calf tenderly. Julia exhaled with relief. A bond had been restored.
