The zookeepers looked at each other, amazed. “She should be charging us,” one muttered, astonished. But instead, the mother hippo seemed strangely calm, her eyes flicking back to Julia more than once. “She trusts her,” the other whispered. Julia stayed crouched, her voice soft and steady.
“Come with us,” she coaxed, motioning toward the direction of the zoo. The calf squealed happily, as if confirming the idea. Against all odds, the mother slowly began to follow.
