Over the following weeks, Julia and David visited the hippo enclosure often. The calf, recognizing them immediately, squealed whenever they approached the glass. It bobbed its head or pressed its nose against the barrier as if greeting an old friend.
Julia often crouched close, whispering softly as if they shared a secret language. David always laughed. “You’ve made a friend for life,” he said. And deep down, Julia knew it was true.
