For what felt like forever, Tom and Dr. Grant listened to muffled commands and running footsteps. Occasionally, the officer’s voice would return, hurried and tense.

“We’ve secured the front.” A pause. “Two suspects matching the description are in custody.” Tom let out a long breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.
